A few days ago, I was talking with a group of people, and we were discussing how falling into a routine is almost always considered a bad thing.

To put it into perspective, our conversation was centered on how regularly we fall into that daily inertia—a life where we simply allow external situations to dictate our days. We talked about the habit of letting ourselves be swept away by the current, slowly becoming dull to the world around us.

It is the familiar cycle of waking up, going to work, coming home, and spending the evening doing something just to unwind, only to prepare ourselves to do it all over again the next day. This is the kind of routine that sweeps us away and distracts us from the blessings and joys of life.

It is very common to blame “the routine” and claim that because of it, we don’t do the things we love, or we neglect the people we care about.

The True Definition of Routine

By definition, a routine is simply a regular way of doing things in a fixed order. There is no doubt that it is easy to fall into a routine dictated by outside factors—our environment, our circumstances, or other people.

However, why should a routine be inherently negative when we have the ultimate power to modify it, add to it, or remove things from it? What if, instead of letting life sweep us away, we intentionally incorporate valuable things into our daily structure?

I believe we all have the ability to follow a routine. The real secret lies in how we choose to use that routine in our day-to-day lives. It is all about integrating actions that make you feel good and are genuinely constructive.

Redesigning Your Day

Imagine your daily routine if you consciously chose to incorporate elements like these:

  • Expressing gratitude: Taking a moment to acknowledge the good things in your life.
  • Showing care: Expressing love and appreciation to your loved ones.
  • Mental enrichment: Dedicating time to an activity that stimulates your mind.
  • Physical enrichment: Carving out time to move your body and protect your health.
  • Personal reflection: Setting aside time to read, journal, or simply enjoy a moment of absolute silence.

A Routine Is What You Make of It

A routine is not inherently good or bad—it is entirely what we make of it.

You might currently feel stuck in a routine that makes you feel like you aren’t advancing, or one that leaves you feeling drained and sad. But remember: you are the one in control. You can choose to stay exactly where you are, or you can change something—even the smallest detail.

By making just one minor adjustment, you will start to feed a tiny surge of energy. Over time, that energy will build, completely changing your perception of your daily routine.
