Right now, I am at an age where many would classify me as “old.” If you couldn’t see me and I simply told you that I’m reaching my mid-50s, you would probably visualize someone well past their prime.
When I was young, if someone told me they were in their mid-50s, I would have thought, “Wow, now that is old.”
But sitting here today, looking at where I am and experiencing how I actually feel, I can’t honestly say I feel old at all.
Is this feeling just wishful thinking?
In a way, yes—but that wishful thinking was transformed into deliberate action to maintain my youthfulness and overall health. For me, it started with a clear vision:
I wanted to live a long, vibrant, healthy life, and I had to do my part to make that a reality.
Has it been challenging? You bet it has.
Maintaining that balance requires navigating three distinct areas of life where we often get tripped up:
- Mentally: We tend to give ourselves a hard time and punish ourselves when we fail to meet expectations—which are usually someone else’s standards that we are trying to fulfill.
- Physically: We often disregard balance. We overconsume, overdo, or fall into the misconception of pushing past our limits—or we swing to the opposite extreme and stop moving altogether.
- Spiritually: We tend to believe we control everything. When the unexpected happens, we revert to self-blame, even when the event was completely beyond our control.
Focusing on these three dimensions has given me a much better grasp on life and has helped me feel significantly younger than the number on my birth certificate.
How I Apply This Daily
1. Mentally: Defining My Own Path
First and foremost, I’ve practiced doing what I truly want to do rather than trying to meet the expectations of others. I’ve learned to say no when I mean no, and yes when I mean yes. By giving myself the time and space to discover what I genuinely enjoy, I’ve learned so much more about who I am.
2. Physically: Finding the Right Balance
I make a conscious effort to take care of my body and stay active. Even on days when I don’t feel like it, I choose to move—even when it would be far easier to stay in bed and watch TV. At the same time, I listen when my body needs rest and avoid pushing past my healthy limits. It’s all about maintaining that sweet spot between doing too little and doing too much.
3. Spiritually: Embracing Stillness
I practice gratitude, prayer, and meditation. In other words, I make time to be still for a few moments each day and listen to that quiet inner voice that brings clarity and comfort. This practice has carried me through difficult times and allowed me to appreciate the good times even more deeply. Giving yourself that time brings a profound sense of peace.
Planting the Seed
This is a high-level look at the core principles that help me thrive and enjoy life every single day. I could go much deeper into each of these areas, but for now, my goal is simply to plant a seed.
I want to remind you that there is always hope, and you can enjoy life regardless of what you are going through right now.
Everything passes. Whatever you are experiencing in this moment, embrace it—and once it’s gone, let it go.
That, ultimately, is the real key to happiness: being fully present.
