There are so many things we want to do in life. We daydream about that bucket-list trip, look forward to events that will bring us joy, or envision the changes that will make us healthier and happier.

But then reality sets in. Because of the busy lives we all lead, we put those plans on hold. We tell ourselves we are just waiting until we find a little extra time to let go and finally take action.

Here is the hard truth:

If you wait for the world to stop turning so you can do what you desire, you will be waiting forever.

The Illusion of “Someday”

If you let life completely take charge of your calendar, you will never give yourself the opportunity to experience the new or different things that might change your perspective.

You will always hear reasons—from others and from yourself—about why now isn’t the right time. Sure, those reasons might be valid. But the reality is that there will never be a perfect time to do certain things.

Consider this:

  • The work never ends: No matter how hard you work, there will always be more to do tomorrow.
  • Time is a commodity: If you constantly relinquish your time to everyone else, they will gladly consume it. This includes family members, friends, and coworkers.

If there is no perfect time, why are we still waiting for it?

Take Back Ownership

It is time to stop waiting and start deciding. If you want to experience the things that matter to you, you have to take ownership of your schedule:

  • If you want to travel: Pick a place, choose a date, and book it.
  • If you want to get in shape: Carve out a non-negotiable block of time in your day and go do it.
  • If you want to learn something new: Find a class and sign up.

Everything starts with action and a little bit of commitment. Stepping out of your routine might feel uncomfortable at first, but you will never know the joy of the experience until you actually decide to dive in.

The Ultimate Gift

Life will always be filled with things to do. However, you are the rightful owner of your time, and you have the power to decide how to spend it.

Give yourself the gift of ownership. Time is your most valuable asset—treasure it, use it wisely, and never apologize for finding those moments for yourself.
