How many times have you stopped yourself from chasing a dream because you felt “too flawed” to succeed?
We often envision the peak of our goals—the success, the fulfillment, the finish line—only to be halted by what we perceive as our own “rough edges.”
We see these traits as roadblocks, things that stump our movement and keep us small.
But what if those edges aren’t obstacles?
What if they are actually the tools you need to reach the top?
It’s All in the Name
The labels we give ourselves dictate how we move through the world. If you view your traits as hindrances, they will act as hindrances. But if you reframe them, they become strengths:
- Instead of “Stubborn,” call yourself Determined. That refusal to give up is what will keep you going when others quit.
- Instead of “Sensitive,” call yourself Intuitive. Your ability to feel deeply allows you to understand the world in ways others can’t.
- Instead of “Impulsive,” call yourself Decisive. Your bias toward action can be a superpower in a world paralyzed by overthinking.
Smoothing vs. Sharpening
Think of a rough slope or a piece of raw metal. To make it useful, you don’t necessarily throw it away; you work with it.
You can work on “smoothing” the parts of your personality that cause friction with others, but you can also “sharpen” those same edges to turn them into effective tools.
Use Your Energy Wisely
There is no better feeling than the act of creation. When you stop judging yourself for having a certain quality and start asking, “How can I use this to get where I’m going?”, everything changes.
Your rough edges make you unique. They give you grip. They give you character. Don’t spend your life trying to sand yourself down until there’s nothing left—instead, sharpen those edges and use them to carve out your own path.
