We tend to define our lives by the “Big Moments.” We obsess over the career-defining job offer, the person we choose to marry, or the city we decide to call home.
But here is the truth:
“You cannot make a “big” decision if you haven’t mastered the small ones.“
The life-altering choices don’t happen in a vacuum. They are the peak of a mountain built from thousands of tiny, daily stones. To get to the place where you can choose your future, you must first navigate the decisions that have become so natural you don’t even realize you’re making them.
The Invisible Choices
What are these “small” decisions? They are the ones ingrained in your routine—the ones you make on autopilot. Ask yourself:
- Consumption: Is what you eat and drink nurturing a healthy life, or slowly depleting it?
- Time: Are you spending your hours building a future, or just “getting through” the day?
- Input: Is the information you consume—the news, the podcasts, the social feeds—allowing you to grow, or is it fueling your anxiety?
The Compounding Effect (For Better or Worse)
If you peel back the layers of your life like an onion, you’ll find that where you are today is simply the result of these layers of decisions.
Sometimes, we become “numb” to the results. We don’t notice the harm until it manifests as a health condition, chronic worry, or a toxic relationship.
We feed our minds fear and wonder why we feel anxious. We share our time with people who don’t challenge us to grow and wonder why we feel stuck.
The past is gone, but the future is currently being written by what you do in the next five minutes.
The Courage to Say “No”
The beauty of life is that today—right now—you have the opportunity to pivot. You can choose a better meal, a better book, or a better circle of friends.
I won’t tell you it’s easy. It takes immense courage to look at a comfortable, yet harmful, habit and say “No.”
Anything worthwhile requires effort, but the feeling of true accomplishment outweighs the temporary comfort of staying where you are.
Reflection
If you know the decision you’re making today isn’t the best one for you, what is stopping you from changing it?
“Your future self is waiting for you to decide.“
