The Importance of Self Care

I’m sure that most of you are people that are good and try to give to others and sacrifice everything to help others. Those others could be family, friends or someone else that you know needs a helping hand, which is a very great and noble thing to do.

However if you are a person that constantly gives time, efort, work any energy expending activity to make someone else feel better, well there will be a point where you will feel drained and exhausted of being so giving.

You might think that because you are giving everything you have you will automatically get that extra strength to keep giving, and that might be partially true, however in order to give more you have to practice Self Care.

That means that you should take time to take care of yourself by doing activities that you like or that provide you some needed rest.

And if you incorporate that Self Care every day, you will have more energy to be able to help much more.

  • How many times do you sacrifice something as vital as sleep, because you are working on something that might not be that important or could wait?
  • How many times do you do things because you think that “no one knows how to do them like you” ?
  • How many times do you invest time on activities for others that do not help them or you? You do not know how to say no.

Every day you should enjoy some activities that take care of you such as:

  • Gratitude: Practice giving thanks even if it’s for little things. Voice out what you are thankful for, does not have to be complex. Give thanks for your food, house, family, friends, so many things around you to be grateful for.
  • Practice Stillness: Set some time every day to be still. You can pray or meditate, practice being in silence, just stay still and let your mind rest. That time you invest on these practices, will reap many benefits and actually you will find that your day will be more effective and efficient by just practicing stillness.
  • Nurish: Take time and enjoy your meals, don’t skip because you are busy. Even if it’s something relatively quick sit and enjoy that time to eat. Also find nourishment for your mind by way of a few pages of a book or an uplifting video.
  • Rest: Take time to sleep enough, turn all distractions off , practice being calm and enjoy your rest. Also you can incorporate naps during the day, even 10 minutes does wonders.
  • Move: Incorporate physical activities such as stretching, walking, running, biking, swimming anything that makes you physically stronger.
  • Practice Positive thinking: Look for those things that excite you and look at them from a positive perspective, all situations can be seen differently, why not choose the positive one? Maybe look at it this way, there are opportunities instead of problems.

“A problem is an opportunity for you to learn and excel”

And similar to  these examples there are many self care things you can do.

Like anything in life you have to practice and find the balance between too much self care and too little, but as we grow we learn and get wiser on how to manage our time and energy.

Giving is a wonderful thing, however giving yourself some time for you is not a bad thing. The stronger and better you feel, will allow you to be able to give much more, so practice Self Care so you are able to help much more.
