How do you define your edge?

Written by Edgar Luna

A few years ago I was asked a relatively simple question:

How do you define your edge?

When I heard it and tried to understand it better I requested more information on what “edge” meant and the context of the word, and the concept I was given was the following:

Your edge is the point where you are mentally and physically challenged but also find balance and ease. Exploring your limits, stepping away from your comfort zone, and cultivating awareness of mind and body.

And I wondered, analyzed and really searched within. I found that I related this more to my physical edge where I always seem to push myself physically until discomfort turns to pain and kept going until I went over the edge and ended up injuring myself by trying to push beyond . Being conscious that even though my body was telling me to back off, I kept pushing until something either breaks or makes me stronger.

I think everyone has heard the saying:

“No pain, no gain”

However, is this accurate?

As I have grown older and had my share of injuries I have learned to listen to my body and push it to the physical edge without going over and getting hurt. And that has come with a lot of practice of learning about myself and being conscious and acknowledging my physical and mental sensations.

Now there are ways to push yourself to that uncomfortable sensation where you feel you want to quit, but you can keep going. There is discomfort, however pain is not present. That is when you start growing by being in an uncomfortable place and staying engaged.

In my case I have found that I have always had difficulty expressing my vulnerability and pushing myself over the edge, I have perceived it to be a sign of strength, which has caused harm instead of making me stronger.

As I grow wiser, I understand that the vulnerability is actually a sign of strength and helps me balance my life.

My edge is where I can feel vulnerable and accept the reality that it’s ok to have that feeling and honor it.

Now I am sharing a little bit of my experience. I ask the same question about you, maybe you already know, maybe you need to search within or maybe you don’t care which is OK.

But I would recommend taking some time to search within and find that edge. It could be physical, mental or spiritual whatever it is I know it will help you know yourself better and work towards having a happier you.
