As we get closer to that milestone of the end of the calendar year, as a society we take this time to look back at our year and reminisce on how these last twelve months went for us. You might have reached some of your goals and you might have fallen short in others. No matter what happened during that time frame, you are here right now.
There are so many things that you chose to do or not do that gave you certain results and some of those results might have been unexpected, the outcome was not what you wanted.
So when that happens what is your reaction?
You don’t have to look very far and you will see people blaming someone or something else for the undesired outcome.
- Maybe you did not get the job you wanted because you are set in your mind that the person that was chosen for the job got hired because they must have connections.
- You were not able to meet a deadline because someone else distracted you and you could not concentrate on finishing the job on time.
- You want to reach a healthier weight but you did not make any progress because there are limited healthy choices in the market or it was a tough year and you seek comfort in food.
You can find an excuse for anything that did not go your way, the world is filled with them.
However, how many times do you look at yourself and take ownership for your results?
The world is filled with challenges and we are influenced by the environment in which we are living and how we were raised, however, even with all that, we own our decisions and should accept them as our choices and responsibility by being accountable for our choices..
Yes it is very difficult to accept when we are wrong when things don’t go our way, however we must learn from it and move on.
Think about it, when you blame something you can’t control, it’s very likely that you will not get better at what you do and you will keep making the same choices and getting undesired results.
If you start being accountable, taking responsibility for your actions and start working on the things you can control, you are on the path to improvement.
Analyze how your choices contributed to the end result and make adjustments for the next time you are faced with a similar situation, you will be one step closer to learning and growing as a person.
So next time your choice does not give you the expected results, be accountable, we are human and we all make mistakes, accept and analyze what you could have done better to get your desired result.
Little by little you will learn more about yourself and maybe you will see “opportunities” instead of problems.
Being accountable is something that is very valuable in your life’s journey.
